The yen (円, en) (sign: \; code: JPY) is the currency of Japan. It is the third most-traded currency in the foreign exchange market after the United States dollar and the euro. It is also widely used as a reserve currency after the U.S. dollar, the euro and the pound sterling. As is common when counting in East Asia, large quantities of yen are often counted in multiples of 10,000 (man, 万) in the same way as values in Western countries are often quoted in thousands.

In 1985 a dramatic change began. Finance officials from major nations signed an agreement (the Plaza Accord) affirming that the dollar was overvalued (and, therefore, the yen undervalued). This agreement, and shifting supply and demand pressures in the markets, led to a rapid rise in the value of the yen. From its average of \239 per US$1 in 1985, the yen rose to a peak of \128 in 1988, virtually doubling its value relative to the dollar. After declining somewhat in 1989 and 1990, it reached a new high of \123 to US$1 in December 1992. In April 1995, the yen hit a peak of under 80 yen per dollar, temporarily making Japan's economy nearly the size of the US.

The yen declined during the Japanese asset price bubble and continued to do so afterwards, reaching a low of \134 to US$1 in February 2002. The Bank of Japan's policy of zero interest rates has discouraged yen investments, with the carry trade of investors borrowing yen and investing in better-paying currencies (thus further pushing down the yen) estimated to be as large as $1 trillion.[4] In February 2007, The Economist estimated that the yen is 15% undervalued against the dollar and as much as 40% undervalued against the euro.[5] .

円相場（えんそうば）は、円に対する外貨の相対的価値（為替レート）のこと。通常は、外貨1単位に相当する円貨額で表示する（通貨や市場によっては別の慣行もある）。

特に米ドルやユーロ、英ポンドとの比較によって示され、その中でも米ドルに対しての「円の相対的価値」を示すことが多い。

際市場において、日本の通貨である円の相対的価値が、何らかの意味で基準とみなされる水準よりも高い状態を「円高」、逆に低い水準であるとき「円安」という。分かりやすく言えば、今まで1ドル120円だったが、1ドル115円になった場合には、円高になる。つまり、より少額の「円」で、1ドルと交換できるようになる訳である（同じ円貨額でより多くのドルを買えるようになったと考えると、通貨価値が上がったということが理解されやすい）。

2006年現在、110円以下になったときには、明確に円高という。円高の際には、日経平均株価は急落することが多い。また、輸出産業の業績が悪化し、輸入産業の業績が好調となる。

輸入するときには、今までより安く仕入れる事ができるので、コストが削減できる。

輸出するときには、円が高いために買ってもらいにくくなるため、利益が減少する。

2006年現在、120円以上になった時には、明確に円安という。円安においては、日経平均株価は急騰することが多い。また、輸入産業の業績が悪化し、輸出産業の業績が好調となる。

輸入するときには、今までより高く仕入れなくてはならないので、コストが余計にかかる。

輸出するときには、円が割安なので買ってもらいやすくなり、利益が増大する。
